Average Rating:   9.8   Newstracker bot v3.5 by snabbi
Description:
Bot that downloads and parses RSS (news) feeds, messaging any new items to a channel.

Submitted Review Author's Updates
Review:
Upon loading the script I was presented with a (somewhat untidy) dialog, with the settings for adding/removing/editing newsfeeds. There was also a message in the status window informing me of what I had just loaded, and some information regarding the setup. Accessing the settings dialog via a popup, I enabled the two feeds that are configured by default.

The script is intelligent enough to only report “new” news, and as such the specified time intervals can pass with no output, but this does not mean the script isn’t working.

A small point to note is that the script creates a folder in your main mIRC directory for temporary storage instead of creating it in the directory the script resides in. Also, upon unloading the script it doesn’t unset variables.

These minor points aside, this addon works well. Good work.

Hello I have made an update for the newstracker and have listened to your remarks. I have removed the extra "news" folder in your mIRC folder, have added a window showing all downloaded messages, improved the looks of the dialogs, added on load and on unload support and have swtiched to binvars to enable the script to parse more RSS feeds.

A new feature is the "check URL" button. The script will now show the available tags.

Hope you enjoy this new version and like to see your comments!

Hi there seems to be a bug in the script. The allow only one time post rule dont work with current mirc. Instead Newstracker 3.5 floods third or some other older post once in a 30min ar so. Could you edit the script to send the news link only once to channel?

Yo.
My problem: the url which the bot puts out is sometimes messed up, and does not work.

Notice how it has the 1000 in it.

Also, it sometimes repeats old topics.

Anyhelp would be appreciated.. if this is still being supported..

Updated the script to version 3.5:

The reported error below has been fixed and I have combined the two dialogs into a single window with two tabs.

Hope you enjoy this version.

one way to improve your dialog is make the button Ok be OK and also make the two dialogs one dialog with tabs and also you should make it the dialog open -md not just -m so it doesnt block your screen. hope that was helpful.

Thnx for your comments.

It has been a single dialog in the previous version, but people were telling me it was untidy. Tabs can be a solution yes.
I disagree with your comment to make it open -md because the dialogs are just to change some settings. You are not required to keep them open.

why is it i get Error while parsing message is: * /bset: insufficient parameters (line 600, newstracker_3585.mrc) when i add a website that has RRS feed?

snabbiAug 5, 2007 6:10PM
I think you have passed my tests of adding a new feed to your lists, while you shouldnt have. You have probably left the line containing the newsbanner blank. This line is messaged to the channels when a new newsitem is downloaded. The line should contain &tags which are replaced with the contents of the <tags>tags</tags> of the RSS feed. You can check which &tags are available by clicking the button Check URL.

Most users will have something like: &title - &link

You can also add any other texts to personalize your message like: CNN-Feed &title - &link

I have found a bug in my script, which has been caused by some minor adjustments just before publishing the script. Unfortunately I am unable to update my script for the following week. The sixth line (the one containing on start) of the script should be:

on *:start: { newsfirststart | news_reset_messages_to_default }

Without this adjustment you will not be able to click the menu after reboot. The news_reset_messages_to_default alias loads the messages and therefore enable you to see the required texts. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Second note from author:

Some people do not know for sure if the script is functioning properly, because the feed will only show new newsitems. If you enter the command: /hfree newstracker then the script will forget which items have already been published. Therefore all newsitems will be new during the next download. This is therefore a way to test my script.

Note from the author:

Thanks for your comments. I have been working on an update, which I have sent to someone for testing before putting it here. The new version will not add the "news" folder anymore, nor add a lot of variables. I will also add an "on unload" feature to be able to reset the settings. I would like to get some suggestions on how to improve the appearance of my dialog!

I will have a look into the forum feed/login as well.
